. COUNTRIES: HAITI : DISASTERS: EARTHQUAKES: At Carnival Time, a Joyless Haiti At Carnival Time, a Joyless Haiti By MARC LACEY Published: February 14, 2010New York Times <http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/15/world/americas/15carnival.html>
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti Oh, what a party there would have been. Sound trucks with towering speakers. Dancers in eye-catching outfits. Three days of rum-fueled, dusk-to-dawn debauchery.
But Haitis Carnival was called off, replaced with an equal period of mourning, and the grand Champ de Mars square on Sunday had none of the boisterous joy that usually breaks out this time of year. Religious leaders shouted out sermons and their followers, packed together tightly, held their arms toward the sky. Some Haitians did take to the streets for some dancing on Sunday. But most of all there was glumness across this crumbled capital.
It would have been such a big day, said Ralph Severe, 28, who had been set to dance in the 2010 Carnival parade here. There would have been so much music, so many colors.
A reviewing stand, where important people would have watched the spectacle, looked oddly out of place on the Champ de Mars, surrounded by thousands of tents sheltering those who have lost their homes. The only masks on peoples faces were surgical ones, to cover up the putrid smell.
Although many Haitians said they missed Carnival, this troubled countrys biggest holiday, there was really no debate about whether it ought to go on so soon after such a devastating natural disaster.
The earthquake destroyed my life even though Im living, said Mr. Severe, with similarly traumatized people all around him. I live on the street. I lost everything. Today, I should be dancing but the earthquake ruined everything.
