BOULDER - AeroGrow International Inc., a Boulder-based maker of
indoor-gardening products, reported a loss of $6.3 million for its fiscal
year ending March 31.
AeroGrow (OTCBB: AERO) reported annual revenue of $17.3 million, down 54
percent from the previous year.
The decline in sales was largely due to a deliberate shift in the
company's business strategy to reduce its exposure to its retail sales
channel. Sales to retailers declined 70 percent, which accounted for
almost 80 percent of the overall sales decrease.
The decision to reduce retail exposure was driven by concerns regarding
the relatively low profit margins, high capital requirements, operational
requirements, and changing customer dynamics in the retail channel,
according to a company press release.
During the fiscal year, AeroGrow terminated its relationships with a
number of large retail chains and refocused its efforts on building its
direct-to-consumer business.
