Presentation Overview:
Interested in setting up a self-paced chemistry classroom, but not sure how
to get started? Liz started using this course structure last year in her
biology classes and will share her insights on what made this successful
and how it could be used in chemistry classes.
Speaker Bio:
Liz Stewart-Miranda is a biology teacher at Greater Lowell Technical High
School. She has a Bachelors in Anthropology (with a minor in Music History
and Performance) from Tufts University and a Masters of Science in
Archaeology from the University of New Mexico. She is an ABD from the
University of New Mexico with a focus on the Paleolithic Archaeology of
southwestern Europe, which she regularly applies to her in-class teaching
experience, often via miming her work experience to the horror and
occasional delight of her students. She has been teaching science with a
focus on Biology or Chemistry in the high school setting for 13 years and
has additional experience working with college-aged learners as well. She
has spent the majority of her teaching career working with students for
whom English is a Second Language as well as students with various Learning
and Medical Disabilities. Her goal is to teach all students that science
can be welcoming, inclusive, interesting, and especially fun! Liz spends
her summers writing curriculum, consulting, taking classes for an Ed.S
program, and attempting to read some books for fun while working around her
children's summer schedules. She has two cats and two vociferous dogs who
you will undoubtedly hear during the session.
