Presentation Overview:
Sue ran an interdisciplinary project with her Honors Chemistry and Lab
Physics classes last year around small bars made of mortar (concrete
without the aggregate). The chemistry students, after learning about
endothermic and exothermic reactions, made bars of different ratios of
sand, Portland cement and water and measured their temperature profiles
while they cured. The physics students measured the tensile strength of the
bars as an engineering design project on force. Sue will share what it took
to set this up, what happened, and her take-aways.
Presenter Bio:
Sue Klemmer teaches chemistry and physics at Camden Hills Regional High
School, a 750-student public high school serving five towns on the
mid-coast of Maine. Her special interests are the use of history of
chemistry to teach content and scientific methods, concept mapping and
other metacognitive tools, and the role of particulate modeling in
chemistry education. She is currently the Northern Division Chair and hosts
the monthly ChemChat webinars. She is also a member of the Instruction and
Professional Development (IPD) Committee of the Maine Education
Association. Sue earned her BA in Chemistry at Wesleyan University in 1975,
then spent a year as a volunteer teacher on the southern tip of Lake
Michigan. After a year at Carnegie Mellon starting work on a PhD in
theoretical chemistry she realized she had fallen in love with the
classroom and left. She has been teaching high school ever since, minus a
two year gap to gain certification and a sabbatical in 2012-2013, working
on particulate thinking at the University of Maine.
