Chuck is right. Gmail implements a non-standard that allows for any or no
periods in the user portion of the email address. In other words,
n.o.s.b.i.g@xxxxxxxxx is equivalent to nosbig@xxxxxxxxx for all Gmail
accounts.
As another useful but non-standard extension, Gmail allows the use of a
plus sign and a string to be appended to the username and allow a
practically limitless set of unique email addresses to be generated on a
single account.
Imagine if I wanted to sign up to a questionable mailing list on some
random website. I could sign up as nosbig+junk@xxxxxxxxx. This gets to my
nosbig@xxxxxxxxx mailbox with the From: address as listed from my
newsletter signup. I can use this address in filters to keep my inbox from
getting cluttered. It's also a great way to see where your information is
sold and traded, as there could be a unique source of that email address.

I hope Rob chimes in. Because I seem to remember him telling me periods
on the left side of the @ on gmail accounts do not matter.
I just performed a test by sending a message to one of my GMail accounts
and my TWC account I used a period in my TWC account where one does not
exist and it still got delivered. Both GMail messages also arrived, one
with and one without a period in the same address.
