Is there an Open Source equivalent? Is this kind of program useful?

Outlook Express and Outlook (I think) will break up emails with large attachments into smaller email and then put them back together on again at the other end. I am not sure if you can do this with FOSS clients or not. I'm not aware of how to do it in Thunderbird.

It is an interesting idea... but you're still needing to send the large file. In fact, you've just made it larger by breaking it up and tagging it with all the reassembly data. It is just "easier" on the mail server in a sense that it won't time out on a large file. You're not going to get anything more quickly... Don't let it fool you.
