My fingertips are so raw from opening up all these reeds today to harvest all
my Mason bee cocoons. I have about 6 cardboard tubes to that I used towards the
end of their season when I ran out of reeds and my gosh, at first, I hated
those things because you cannot easily peel them open but after a quick
2-minute soak they were a cinch to open and get my bees out. Seriously thinking
of switching to those next season. Now, I still have about 8 bamboo tubes that
another beekeeper gave me that I am scared to death to try and crack open for
fear of harming the bees inside so I might just leave them alone...... The
problem is, is yanking them out of the bee house next year before the bees try
and re-fill them, which is nearly impossible to do.
I found some parasite destruction but not too much thankfully, and I also found
what appears to be around 10 leafcutter bee cocoons in with my masons. They
would have to be wild leafcutters or maybe even another species that uses leaf
material. I will be storing those in a separate jar outside with the
Leafcutters so when they hatch out, there won't be a problem if they are a
different species. Anyway, all the mason cocoons got washed in a very mild
bleach water and rinsed well....now they need to dry before they go into the
frig until spring. Their cocoons are water proof so nothing penetrates, but
it's necessary to kill any fungus spores and wash off any dirt and mites that
are on the outside.
Something really cool happened today, One of the cocoons vibrated in my hand!
Thats never happened before! 🙂 I love my bees so much!
Blessings,
