I just read this here "There were rabbits in which their abscesses did not
respond or continued to grow while receiving the dosage stated in this
paper. However, by increasing the administration rate from every- other-
day to every day eradicated the abscess and sparing these rabbits from
serious surgical intervention such as enucleation. This discovery made it
possible to successfully treat rabbits with inoperable abscesses using only
bicillin. Most rabbits tolerated the increase in bicillin administration
without experiencing side effects, but it is recommended that rabbits with
histories of gut problems, sensitivities or gastrointestinal stasis be
given probiotics as a preventative measure."
So we can't get bicillin here (only at huge cost by the looks of it) but
bicillin is twice the strength of the pen g we use? (Or is it just that it
stays in the system less, so same strength but delivered differently). So
we give pen g daily. Does this quote on increasing bicillin to daily
suggest we might be able to give double the dosage of pen g daily? Or am I
misunderstanding that.
Moo is 7 and a half years old now, so initially I was thinking he might
need to be on penicillin for life. But like I say self-doubt crept in! But
you're helping me see maybe that's possible for Moo.

Moo is about the same, but honestly in many ways that's a great thing as
back in March things were a lot different, before penicillin times. He's
still on the daily penicillin! I'm still at the new vet who saved us from
the old vet but she isn't a rabbit specialist as such.
I looked into other vet options and there's only one rabbit specialist
about 45mins away. So I think I'd go there if needed.
Antibiotics seem to keep the abscess in check so far. Penicillin reduced
the abscess on the side of his mouth back to the best zithromax could do.
But then stalled. So he has the big abscess in his jaw still.
I'm really not sure what we do from here. If we had a break from the
penicillin and went back to Zithromax I don't know if that would work. He'd
ended up with resistance to Zithromax in March after the old vet kept
taking him off and on it. So my fear would be creating resistance by
stopping the penicillin, but by keeping him on penicillin that's also a
risk. It looks like the antibiotics job right now is to keep the abscess
from spreading fast.
Surgery-wise there's the draining the abscess option still but not with
my old vet as the trust is gone. But Moo is such a sensitive chap and
complex (he always responds differently to other bunnies) that I don't know
if surgery is wise for him.
So pretty much where we were before!
Life here is tough with covid still and it's impacted my business a lot,
so with money so tight I also have really limited options in Everything xx
I'm working harder than ever and have half the income. I think many can
relate. Plus we have massive national hikes in all household and living
costs coming 😦 scary times! I know it's not just the UK struggling too ❤️
