Brenda, i am asking Esther, from Medirabbit also as she has helped me many
time. I want to see what she says about all of this…. When Zacky had scald
from bladder sludge I didn’t use scissors, I used a shaver portable
electric but battery operated.

Maybe I should cut a slit in the diaper for the tail? He’s a Holland lop
so I thought he was small enough we didn’t need to. Why do people cut holes
for the tail?
Part of the problem I think is he has loose skin near his bum. He used to
be fat/muscular (almost 5 pounds) when he was young and he’s lost a pound
over the past 3 years (he’s under 4pounds now, he lost several ounces this
month). So even before this ear infection, he looked like he had a skirt
on, the skin would be a roll around him near the tail area. You wouldn’t
notice unless he was sitting. So now that he’s laying on on the same side
all the time (because of dizziness/neurological side effects of ear
infection), if he doesn’t get his butt and tail up and over the loose skin,
then he pees and the pee gets caught. So then the diaper doesn’t work
great for the same reason. I’ll try to pull up his skin before i put the
diaper on. He used to lift/tilt his butt enough to spray the pee away from
him, but for some reason that hasn’t been happening the last week.
I can’t understand how he’s getting wet except for the peeing on himself
theory. I have faux sheepskin with layers of fleece/flannel, towels, and or
mat mats underneath. So he’s not sitting in soaking wet bedding. Maybe the
top layer is damp for a little while but not wet. A few days ago however
he was on a different blanket that DID get soaked, so that’s probably what
caused the skin to go from slightly irritated to all out urine burn.
I called the vets office to see if they want me to wash his butt with
bunny shampoo in the sink before putting on the silver sulfa… ointment she
gave me. Her office used waterless shampoo spray when they cleaned his butt
from the poo he rolled around in just before going in for his vet checkup.
I’m worried about doing a butt bath because I did that Wednesday night and
that seemed to make it worse. But maybe that was because I used a washcloth
gently too. Also it took forever for him to get dry. I can’t use a warm
hair dryer near burned skin and it’s hard to hold him up and do all this -
he doesnt stand on his own usually. I was hoping I could just pour some
saline solution or peroxide or watered down betadine (povidone iodine) on
the bare angry skin and pat dry with paper towels. But the vet doesn’t work
Friday to Sunday so I doubt anyone will call me Back with advice.
Also in noticed the skin under the fur On the perimeter of the bald urine
scald area is getting red. So how do i trim that? I think I still have the
hair trimmer for mens hair that i had for the long haired bunny I used to
have. That would have guards to protect the skin. I’m nervous about using
scissors. There was a set of hair scissors that came with the barber
trimmer , maybe i still have that. It would be safer than kitchen shears.
