One day after the president expressed his disappointment, Pope Benedict XVI made a personal apology over the misunderstanding caused by his remarks on Islam and violence at the traditional Sunday Angelus prayer at his Gandolofo summer residence near Rome. President Yudhoyono himself also called on the people of Indonesia, particularly Muslims, to restrain with regard to the statement. "As the head of state of Indonesia, I regret the Pope`s statement, as it is unwise and inappropriately mentioned," the president told journalists in Havana, Cuba on Saturday on the sidelines of the 14th Non-alinged Movement (NAM) summit. The president made the remarks in Nacional de Cuba hotel, where he stayed during the summit, in regard of the Pope Benedict XVI`s statement on September 12 this year, causing strong reactions in Muslim predominantly countries such as Pakistan, Palestine and Iran. The president also asked Indonesian Muslims to remain calm relating to the Pope`s statement. "To Indonesian people especially the Muslims, although I understand your feeling, but please remain patient and refrain from committing violence," Yudhoyono said, urging the people to keep unity and harmonious life among various religious believers in the country. Yudhoyono on the occasion asked the people to seek peaceful solutions in an effort to overcome any problem. Pope Benedict XVI delivered a lecture at Regensburg University in Bavaria, Germany,in which he dealt with the difference between Islam and Christianity from the historical and philosophical aspects, and the links between violence and religion, especially with regard to jihad. He also quoted a 14th-century Byzantine emperor who said reforms introduced by the Prophet Mohammed were "evil and inhuman". In his statement on Saturday the Pope said that in citing the emperor he had not intended "to make that opinion my own in any way." As the Muslim world seethed with fury over the Pope`s remarks, which critics said linked violence and Islam, the head of the Roman Catholic Church on Saturday said he "sincerely regretted" that he might have offended Muslims. The pontiff`s apology on Sunday did not exceed the Vatican`s statement issued on Saturday, nor did he retract or apologize for the speech in which the offending text was quoted, as some Muslim clerics had demanded, German newsagency DPA, reported on Sunday. Following the Pope`s apology, two leading Muslim organizations, the largest and second largest in Indonesia, also said on Monday they accepted the apology. The two Muslim organization are the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) with about 30 million followers and chaired by Muslim cleric Hasyim Muzadi, and Muhammadiyah with 25 million members, chaired by Din Syamsuddin. "The Pope has apologized (to Muslims) and that`s enough, so let`s calm down," Hasyim said after a function marking the launching of a cooperation project between NU and the Judicial Commission. He said the Pope had corrected his remarks and that was more than enough. If Muslims did not stop reacting to the pope`s remarks, it could create the impression that Muslims were truly furious. "If we remain furious, then (it is feared) the Pople will be considered correct," he said. Muhammadiyah chairman Din Syamsuddin said meanwhile the Pope`s apology, though only in the form of an expression of regret, over his remarks needed to be responded to wisely and with relief by the Muslim community. "It was natural for us to feel insulted by the Pope`s remarks but because the pontiff has offered his apology and is now aware of his mistake, it is good for Muslims to accept his apology," Din said. He said Islam and the Muslim community must have the confidence that their dignity will not be tarnished only because they were humilated by others.
