Subject: [napn] Covid-19 creating greater at risk conditions for already
at-risk kids - any initiatives afoot?
Hi.
For those of you on more than one listserv, you’ll have seen this same post
already – my apologies. It seems we’re becoming, or have become, increasingly
aware of the amplified risk to kids who are already at-risk for abuse or
neglect, under one circumstance or another, being socially isolated and in
potentially cramped and “emotionally tight” quarters with parents and
siblings, etc., which for some raises the risk level for harm (with little
reporting, as these kids are no longer in a position to be observed by
mandated reporters, such as teachers, for instance). In addition, we’ve read
about the lack of Zoom security and hackers entering Zoom chat rooms, so we
know “they’re” out there (those seeking to disrupt or harm the lives, or take
advantage, of others, given the opportunity), which poses another level of
risk for all kids, and, again, perhaps especially those already at risk.
A now-retired colleague called me this morning, and asked if I am aware of
any state or national/federal initiatives to address these increased levels
of risk for harm. Other than some discussion that has come up on this list,
as well as others I subscribe to, I’m unaware of any such initiatives.
Perhaps, at the broad social/government level, we see this as a “temporary”
crisis that will pass (as I’m sure it will), and we’re so busy trying to hold
basic stuff together that there’s no focus on these deeper and more hidden
issues and pathologies.
It seems the initiatives should most involve state and county child
protective agencies, such as DCF here in Massachusetts, with respect to
possible harm within the home, and the school systems and law enforcement
with respect to risk for young people being approached in some way through
on-line education services being hacked, or through stolen on-line student
data, providing on-line access to kids all over the country.
Thoughts? Any initiatives in place or being developed?
Phil
