Yes, I started writing that e-mail last night but feared it would be
hopelessly obscure. So I slept on it and came up with a real-world
example to try and make myself comprehensible. In more involved
productions, engineers tend to think not just in terms of balance, but
also in terms of balance over time (hence my
intttro/verse/chorus/verse/chorus/outro example; could have come up with
a bridge, but why bother).

Something like that, yes. Then we'd repeat the operation to go back to
normal at the end of the chorus.

I would prefer this. In general, I would like it to work much the same
way as fades, with the option of setting the curve from, to, or between
marks.
