JSC Special: Attend Special Commemorative Events Jan. 24 Starting at 9 a.m.
Mark your calendars to attend on Tuesday, Jan. 24. JSC will be holding events
to honor the men and women lost in the agency's space exploration program by
celebrating their lives, their bravery and advancements in human spaceflight.
All employees are encouraged to observe a moment of silence at their
workplace or during the Day of Remembrance commemoration in the Astronaut
Memorial Grove to remember our friends and colleagues.
9 a.m. - Teague Auditorium
Special Lessons and Legacies panel discussion to reflect on how we can
continue to grow and learn from the Apollo 1 accident, which claimed the
lives of the prime crew. The panel presentation will be moderated by
astronaut Nicole Mann and include the following experts: former NASA
astronaut and Apollo 1 backup Lunar Module Pilot Walter Cunningham; former
Flight Director Glynn Lunney; and Apollo 1 Project Engineer Gary Johnson.
This year in January we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 1
tragedy. Although a training session claimed the lives of Lt. Col. Virgil I.
Grissom, Lt. Col. Edward H. White and Roger B. Chaffee, their sacrifice
provided NASA with valuable lessons that enabled mankind to reach the moon
less than two years later.
10:30 a.m. - Astronaut Memorial Grove
Day of Remembrance commemoration to honor Apollo 1, Challenger and Columbia
crews, followed by a Memorial Tree Planting Ceremony for Captain Edgar D.
Mitchell (USN, retired).

pilot for Apollo 10. On Jan. 31, 1971, serving as lunar module pilot during
Apollo 14, Mitchell, became the sixth man to walk on the moon. In completing
his first spaceflight, Mitchell logged a total of 216 hours and 42 minutes in
space. He was subsequently designated to serve as backup lunar module pilot
for Apollo 16. Mitchell passed away on Feb. 4, 2016, nearly 45 years after he
walked upon the lunar surface.
There will be limited parking available along the tree grove; employees are
encouraged to walk or carpool.
