I had another thought, are you sure your music is on your hard drive?  The iTunes Music Library.xml file contains only a data base for your songs but the actual music is for most people in the iTunes Music Folder and if that is not on your hard drive you would have no music to play even though the program may show the art work etc.  If the Copy files to iTunes Folder is not selected in preferences your music could be all over the place on the hard drive but it still has to be somewhere on the drive for it to play.
