Hi Jim,
I think your OS is 9.0.4, right?
In your System Folder, in the Preferences Folder, there is a file called "Sound
Preferences". Drag it to the trash, and then restart. A new preference file
will be created. Go to the Apple Menu/Control Panels/Sound and input your
desired settings and you'll be good to go.
