Careful; the reference to the Apple product below refers to the AC to USB adapter portion of the charging system only. Since the U in USB stands for 'universal', then it follows than any USB device plugged into this adapter will receive the required 5 volts DC required to charge it on the proper pins. The second half of the charging system is the USB to 30 pin docking cable that plugs into the iPhone and iPad. Thankfully, Apple has made this cable universal to all its products, so you can indeed use this set-up for both devices.
