[muglo] external USB modem experiences?

My son is trying to sell his MacBook, but the buyer has a bit of a
stumbling point over internet access. For a fair amount of time each
year, the buyer is in a mountainous area that does not have high speed
connections.
Hence, the buyer would need to purchase an external USB modem, for a
dial-up connection.
Do any of you have experience with the external USB modem? Is it a
software based modem or hardware?
(Yes, we are searching forums for information to help with the sale,
but it is always better when it is someone you "know")
