Rogers recently upped the speed of my business line from 3 to 5 Mbps, at no
charge. Yesterday I downloaded Apple's 92 Meg (I believe) combined update i=
n
about 3 (three!) minutes. So no obvious slowdown in this end of the city.
(Exeter Rd.)

If you want to check the speed of your downloads=8A go to Apples site and try
a large download. Their site is fast and will allow your cable modem to wor=
k
at maximum speed, moderated only by the amount of traffic on your local
loop. If you can't get any speed out of Apple's site, then you definitely
have a problem some where either in London or on your machine. Try the same
download in the day and again late at night. There will most likely be a
change in the amount of traffic between those times. If your download
changes substantially between your test times, then it is likely a Rogers
overload problem. If there is little change, then it may be on your machine
or on your cable line.

A couple of years back, I had problems with low download speeds on my
high-speed line. Rogers traced it to an inferior line installation
complicated by possible damage to the cable (e.g. Rocks can move around fro=
m
the frost effects and can cut/damage underground installations). The signal
was so badly degraded (about 1/1000 of the normal amplitude) that my modem
continually requested resends, which slowed down the speed substantially.
When they installed a new line, things returned to normal. (And the TV
reception was substantially better too. No noise on the higher channels!)
