Dumb question, but are you hitting return after renaming & does the new 
name appear under the icon?
If so, the disk may be locked, although that should show up after an 
attempt to rename. Check that possibility under "Info".
Can't see that Office would have any bearing, but O/S X does some weird 
things it never did before.
