In addition to Genevieve's correct comments, know that Microsoft turns OFF
the file extensions by default so as not to confuse newbies. Stupid stunt on
their part, as I personally feel it's more confusing NOT to know what the
files are. But then maybe a newbie would disagree?

Anyway, I always suggest that you turn them back on so you can see the file
type. If you want to do that, go to your Windows Explorer, which you can
access by either hitting the Windows Key + E or right clicking the Start
button and choosing EXPLORE.

Then within Windows Explorer, click Tools > Options > View. Scroll down a
bit until you see the option for HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOW FILE TYPES and
UNCHECK that. Now you can see the file extensions such as .doc so you'll
know you renamed them correctly.

This may be because you renamed the file but at the same time omited to
write the file extension name (i.e. ".doc").
this file extension means that this is a word document, if it is deleted, it
will lose its "natural link" to Word.
so try renaming as per the following example:
Test.doc
Hope this will help

Subject: [mso] Word issue "renaming a file"

Greetings,

I've been having issues with my word program. I deleted the normal.dot
files which alleviated one issue. Now when I try to rename a file is says
"the file may become ususable" if I click ok it then turns into a calendar
looking icon not a regular word doc icon. I attached this file to an email
and when it was sent it was not "usuable" go figure! Any wisdom?

Thankyou!
