To tell if you are in Insert mode in Word look at the status bar at the bottom of the Word window. You will see toward the far right either OVR in grey or black. If grey you are in Insert mode which is the default and letters you type will be added. If in Overstrike mode, the letters are black and when you type you will overwrite existing letters.
