>something that looks like a 'degree' symbol, apparently made using a kind of space character... ALT 0160 Right...sorry, can't remember then all when I sit down to think of them. That's the HARD SPACE symbol. If you hit Shift/Ctrl/Spacebar you enter a hard space. It's used to hold words together. Like a name. You'd want to add one like this: Dian[HardSpaceHere]D. Chapman. Then...should my name be chopped due to line spacing, you will keep my middle initial with my first name...which is the professional way to do it. Allowing the first/middle initial to be split is very unprofessional! Lots of other uses to keep stuff "stuck" together. >and a character that resembles this: <-' That's a SOFT LINE BREAK. You should RARELY use this...and only when you know what you're doing. Geez...I had someone writing a book recently and several folks used the Shift/Enter (soft break) for nearly EVERY LINE! ARRRGGGHHHH!!! You should just type away and only hit the return to stop one paragraph and move on to another. However, since the soft break does hold lines together within paragraphs and allows you to pull off a few tricks...when you know what you're doing...it can be very useful. And yes, I do use it a lot. >is there something special about this compared to a normal 'enter' Yes. A regular return STOPS a paragraph. A soft return CONTINUES the paragraph. This is important because formatting in Word goes with the PARAGRAPH. So you have to use this with caution until you understand how styles work in Word. I'd suggest you read this article I wrote on styles: http://www.mousetrax.com/styles.html >The other one is a small circle about mid height on the line with 4 dots around it, it appears when you copy/paste in multiple cells from excel. I don't use Excel...so I'd have to experiment with that one to figure it out...which I can't do at the moment cos' I'm running something in Word. You might also want to check out the Edit/Replace dialog. If you click MORE you'll expand the dialog to see other features. And if you check out the SPECIAL list, you'll see several other special symbols that can be searched/replaced. Hope this helps... ALT 0160 and a character that resembles this: <-' imagine that as all one smaller character (I tried to copy/past the actual one here but it doesn't show up) I found that it is made when doing a shift-enter but I haven't found the significance of it, is there something special about this compared to a normal 'enter' neither of these show unless the show all is enabled. I spent quite a bit of time looking for the 'degree' symbol the other night, I still don't know what it's significance is. The other one is a small circle about mid height on the line with 4 dots around it, it appears when you copy/paste in multiple cells from excel. there is one in each cell and one at the end of each line of cells. I've had a bear of a time trying to delete the last one of those on each line, at least I have that problem at work office 2k on 2k OS on dell machines. I just tried deleting them in a test doc here and it worked fine, (highlight - ctrl-x and it was gone). when I do the paste at work, I don't get the 'boxes' around each cell like I do here at home, must be an OS thing cause I'm using XP-pro here, 2k there. -Jim- Dian Chapman wrote: >Don't know of a list, as most of it's pretty basic. > >* You have your Paragraph Markers...which look like a writer's paragraph >mark >* You have Tabs...which look like an arrow before the text is pushed in. >* You have Page Breaks that say Page Breaks >* You have Section Breaks that say Section Breaks >* You have Column Breaks that say Column Breaks <-- I dont remember seeing these] >* You have spaces, which are dots between words where spaces are >* You have tiny "Anchor" symbols next to frames that have been anchored to >the page or paragraph >* You have dots around the page, where the margins are <-- I dont get dots or any indication] > >* I think the only MYSTERY symbol is the tiny square in the left margin, >which, when used, represents "keep with next" or "keep together" formatting >applied to that paragraph style.
