Could you perhaps conditionally format the cell so that the number zero is
the same colour as the background, so becomes invisible.

Thank you for your advice.  Entering bigger numbers did work.  I will 
settle with this method for now.
I suppose there isn't any alternative formula that you don't need to type 
in row/column numbers?

Why not just make the numbers bigger than they are ever likely to need to 
be?
