OK...we've had this dance before. When we last discussed this
difference, I posted a thread to the private MVP group to ask MVPs &
softies for the definitive answer.

So allow me to add some "expert testimony" here (below) from the thread.
However, you'll have to trust me on this, because I can't post
names/emails of those folks who replied. But know that these comments
are replies, from the horses mouth, so to speak.

And remember that I've also installed the program and ran through much
of it, quickly, and realized it looks/works the same. The reason I
removed it was because I also was running Office 97, Office 2000 and
Office 2002, as well as Works Suite with Word. So my system was becoming
a mess and I needed to remove something to help with the stability, due
to too many Word apps and two of the same version.

--------------
Hi Dian,
There is Works 6 and Works Suite 2002. Works 6 has a word processor
similar to Word but it is a lighter version as it always has been. Works
Suite 2002 comes Works 6 and Word 2002 as the word processor along with
some additional components.

If it is Word in Works that they are talking about then it is Word with
a
few subtle differences that the Works Suite Add-in adds (mainly Works
Task Launcher and Works Mail Merge) but to someone who isn't looking for
these things it is Word.

The main difference is the price.

Works 6: $55 ($40 w/ rebate)

Works Suite 2002: $109

---------------
Dian,
You have to be very careful to distinguish Works and Works Suite. The
former contains the traditional "Works word processor," which, though
not a bad little app, is nothing like as powerful as Word (you can't
even make tables except by using the Works spreadsheet). Works Suite,
however, does contain Word--exactly the same as you get in Office. You
may not get some of the Office tools that you would get in Office Pro or
SBE, but you do get everything you would get in freestanding Word, plus
some special add-ins offered only in the Works Suite version. Users who
buy Works Suite only to use Word, however, should be cautioned that they
should uninstall the Works Suite Add-in for Word before trying to use
Word freestanding, because the add-in causes numerous problems, a couple
of which are constant prompts to save Normal.dot and multiplying Mail
Merge menu items. I believe it is also possible to install just Word,
without the rest of the Works Suite.
-------------

If someone is in doubt then they need to go to Help/About and verify
what
they actually have. I suspect that they actually have Works and not
Works
Suite.
-------------

Yes it is the same as the version of Word you get with Office XP bugs
and
all.
-------------

If it is the Works Word Processor the title bar will read: "Microsoft
Works Word Processor". So there shouldn't be any question as to what
they are actually using
-------------
There is a product called Works Suite in which you get Word 2002. There
is also a product called Works. Works 6.0 is the latest version of that
product.

Word 2002 is the default word processor in Works Suite 2002. While Works

Suite includes the Works 6.0 word processor, the predefined
word-processing templates and wizards (such as letter and reports) in
the Task Launcher use Word 2002.

When the Works Suite 2000 first came out, there were several issues with

the add-in that was installed. As a result, the standard phrasing was to

remove the add-in. Once this is done, you have Word 2002 with all of its

glorious features and flaws.

Does this help clear up the issue?

Linda-
We use a document management and security system here called "DOCS
Open". We had one agent who used the Word that came in Works 2002, but
it would not work with DOCS Open at all. I called tech support for DOCS
Open and they informed me that Word in Works and Word in the Office
suite, while similar, are very different programs.

Any of you who use the version of Word that comes with Works instead of
Office (Dian, I know you said you installed it and that Word is exactly
the same there??)

I have a student who sent me a screenshot of Word's Tools>Options and it
is WAY different than any Tools>Options I have EVER seen in Word. Can
someone please open their Works' version of Word and go to Tools>Options
and tell me what tabs they have in there? This screenshot I'm looking
at only has a General page and no tabs at the top at all.

Dian...are you SURE the version you looked at was exactly like the full
version?
