Hi Jan...try going into Excel....go to Tools/Options/General and see if
"Ignore other Applications" is checked. If it is, uncheck it

  Subject: [mso] Printing labels

Everyone waits for the last minute & this is no exception. A group that
I do volunteer help for cannot figure out how to do labeling when the
list is in Excel. I remembered it being really easy so I tried to see
if I could do it. I reach a certain point & keep getting this error
"word could not re-establish a DDE connection to excel to complete the
  current task".

This is what I did to get this error:
open new word document > tools > mail merge > create > mailing labels >
new document type > get data > open data source > desk top (list in
folder on desktop) > file of type...all > clicked on the list. That's
it, I can't get past that error message.

  Please help..label badly needed.

  Thanks,
  Jan
