Ken You will be getting interference from AVG if it is either downloading an update or performing a full system check. It's not as noticeable as Norton's effects but it will have an impact nevertheless. But I endorse Dian's recommendation - don't use Word for emails! Apart from anything else all the embedded formatting (which you don't see on the finished article) makes for bulky mails which can be annoying for your recipients if they don't have fast connection speeds!
