Why would I venture in these two places with that bit of OT news?

Well, one of my nightmares in life is making sure sites are up and
running, that anti-spam tools are working as designed and that messages
actually get delivered where they are supposed to go. I depend on systems
like DNS to tell me "unknown host or domain", etc.

When there is a typo in a user request, I need his applications to tell
him "Hey!! Never heard of joe@xxxxxxxxxxxxx! In fact, I can't find a
server for that domain." The same is true for all of you who send mail to
this group. Heck, if you're on the Internet you depend on this behavior.
It affects all of us who send mail, visit websites and generate revenue
with the Internet.

Recently, Verisign sorta hijacked that function and was redirecting all
such failed requests to it's own little catch system to generate the
traffic and automagically create those domains, etc., forcing anyone who
actually wanted those names to BUY them from Verisign. They aren't the
only ones doing this and it's a fairly smart approach. However, as the
registration owners for .com,.net,.org, etc., registrations, the tool they
put in place destabilizes the Internet in an unacceptable way.

Thankfully, ICANN has put its foot down and Verisign must comply with
their edict.

Internet life shall return to normal again.

<sigh of relief>
