I believe that offering this package is actually a decision made by
Dell/Gateway, not by Microsoft. That said, if you look at Dell's site, you
will see that you can easily add Office to any computer by clicking the
"Customize" button on the page for the actual computer she is ordering. (If
she actually talked to someone when she ordered and they didn't suggest
adding Office, she should contact Dell customer support. They are always
supposed to ask!)
How does this tie to Office? Because the Office options are not limited to
Basic, but also include Small Business (which as of 2003 includes Publisher
and PowerPoint) and Professional (which adds PowerPoint, Publisher, and
Access).
If you want to add the products after buying the computer, you can buy them
individually or as the packages listed on the MS site. Prices on Amazon or
via Staples, OfficeMax, etc. are fairly reasonable....
