That message causes me NO problems whatsoever, Ron...and it's especially
nice if it brings lurkers out of lurk mode LOL None of the posts in this
thread have caused me any problems...however, I assure you that this thread
WILL result in people unsubscribing....but hey, like you say, if that's all
it takes to make people leave a valuable resource like this, that's THEIR
loss

So...cast your vote, my friend.

I agree, in some cases, list owners must be tyrants...but in this case, I
think we're talking borderline, so I will go with what the group wants. In
other cases, like flame-wars, I assure you I WILL be a tyrant ;-)

Subject: [mso] Re: Moderation...or Censorship?

I am not a moderator on this list and in fact haven't posted in a long time.
I
am not speaking for Linda or anyone else but myself here.

I have been a moderator on various lists for many years, and to any
responsible, ethical, and caring moderator, this very question is one of the

most difficult to address.

Any time a moderator makes a decision to end a thread or remove a post or
any
of the other options that moderators have, it is a form of censorship
regardless of the reason behind the action.

Good moderators weigh the different factors in the situation at hand, do
their
best to remain impartial, and use their best judgement to make a decision.
That frequently involves allowing messages that the moderator persoanlly
disagrees with completely or even finds offensive personally go through. It
also frequently means that the moderator has to block a message or stop a
thread that they agree with or that is stating what they would say
themselves.
It's not always easy to remain impartial, and it's not always easy to judge
what action is in the best interest of the group. Mistakes will be made.
