Sorry Graham, I should have specified the field with validation rule would

Thanks for trying Cathy, but that doesn't work - saves OK so syntax etc. is
accepted, but when M or F are entered in the Field (it currently has all
No's), Acccess gives the message "The value you entered isn't valid for
this
field. For example, you may have entered text in a numeric field or a
number
that is larger than the FieldSize setting permits." and putting quotes on
value list Row Source gets the same result.

Anybody got any other ideas?

Thanks for the clarification.  To prevent any other entry that M/F, in
table
design view, set the Validation Rule to:

Like "M" Or "F"

If you want to also have a lookup you can set the list box value to M;F.
