I can see your point, but the copies have been cluttering up my nice little list of permanent, ongoing Word files. But I've figured out how work around it: I'll move the files somewhere else and then put shortcuts to those files in my nice-little-list folder. Then the copies will go in the somewhere-else folder with the actual files. Essentially, it's one path to track and your source for recovery is always known so fewer pieces of experimental data are required in order to track the document.
