It sounds like you have field codes turned on, Robert. Go to Tools>Options
and click on the View tab and remove the check from Field Codes.

could see and read this number just fine on the screen, but after
changing the Print Quality in Printer Properties, I no longer see this
number. Instead, I see the following:
