Hi James. I don't know any way to make Outlook do this...but I do know you
say you use many email accounts....so, why don't you use the send/receive
settings and create groups to space out the downloads from different
accounts so they aren't all coming in at once?...or turn some of the
accounts automatic settins off and download them manually after the ones
that are set to download automatically are done?

That's about the only thing I can think of to tell you.

======================
I think you'll find James that the issue is not with Outlook, but with the
mail server, which will be set up (as most servers are) to not delete mail
until the download is finished.
======================

Precisely. My question is whether there is a way to tell Outlook to "finish"
--- "in the middle" --- that is, to stop in the middle in an orderly way ---
so that the server WILL delete the downloaded mail because the download is
"finished".

=========================
I think you are pushing the practical limits of dial-up to be downloading
1000 emails (some with large attachments).
=========================

Tell me something I do NOT know.
