Dear GDUI Members and Friends,
As summer winds down, how about a trip to the movies! Yes, the air conditioning
is appealing, as is the time off from work – and don’t forget that buttery
popcorn! But, better than all of these excellent reasons for taking in a movie,
perhaps with a group of enthusiastic friends – and their guide dogs, of
course! – Better than all of these great excuses for whiling away a couple of
hours in the movie theater is, wait for it, Puppies! Not just any puppies
either! Puppies who have been bred, and will be trained, for a life of service!
Opening soon in a movie theater in your community is the much anticipated
“Pick of the Litter,” a feature-length documentary film that follows the P
litter of five Guide Dogs for the Blind  puppies from the moment they are born
through all the stages of their journey toward becoming working guide dogs.
Three girls, two little boys, the puppies have been bred by GDB to have the
temperament, the intelligence, and the dispositions that will qualify them to
give us the independent lifestyle we seek when we apply for a guide dog.
Which puppies will make the cut? Who are those puppy raisers we love so much?
How do they condition and cajole those tiny, adorable fluffballs to get them
ready for the all-important tests that select only the best? What is training
like for those gangly teen-agers who make the first cut? Who are the trainers,
how do they do it? And then, how does the magic of the match actually happen?
This is the movie that will answer all your questions and turn you into a
giggly, teary appreciative puddle of puppy love! (That’s who I became after
just
a minute or two of watching the movie trailer!)

even more good news --– is audio-described!

Preliminary screenings of “Pick of the Litter” are scheduled for theaters in
Los
Angeles and New York City on this coming Friday, August 31.( West L.A.,
California ( Royal Theatre, Friday, August 31st-September 13th; New York, New
York, IFC Center, Friday, August 31st-September 27th.) Then, more theaters
will be scheduling the film throughout September. Find a schedule of

movie houses to tell them about Pick of the Litter, which is being distributed
by IFC Films/Sundance Selects.

Before you go, download the app for IOS that will allow you to access the
film’s
audio description directly through your IPhone’s ear buds!
Here’s how: Download the Actiview-Movie Access app from the Apple App Store on
your iPhone. Open the App and click on the PICK OF THE LITTER graphic and
download the assistive content that you prefer (e.g., audio description, or
captioning). It’s good to download the content at home as some theaters may
not have Wi-Fi.

Remember, don’t leave home without your IPhone, and  bring your ear buds with
you to the theater, and when the movie starts, hit the button on the content
you downloaded. The app will use your microphone to sync with the movie, so be
sure it is unobstructed. Once in sync the content will start on your iPhone.

because every guide dog puppy is an adorable guide dog puppy – no matter which
schools raise our dogs or provide our training – and, the more people know
about
the immense care and many resources our schools dedicate to providing
