BlankLoved those weekends at Higgins Lake.  Loved Bill Richards too.  He would 
always say something to make you smile.  He really did enjoy what he was doing. 
 Great man! R.I.P. Bill Richards.

e really was that kind of guy! I remember seeing him get mad only once. One 
time a skier forgot to arrange a ride back to Onendaga after skiing. He yelled 
only a little and made sure she got home anyway.

Some people might remember him from the cross-country skiing group.

Bill Richards known for being active and humble Curt Smith , Lansing State 
Journal ST. JOHNS Bill Richards made the world better for innumerable Clinton
County residents, from schoolchildren to senior citizens. He'll also be 
remembered as a humble man. "He never liked attention. never liked praise," said
Gale Capling, who knew Richards through her job at the Clinton Area Transit 
System, an organization he founded. "He always let the people who did the work
get the praise even though he was the fuel behind the fire," she said Thursday. 
Richards, of St. Johns, died late Wednesday afternoon. He was 89. He and
his late wife, Jennie, had six children. Richards came to St. Johns in 1946 
with his father, who bought an ice cream business operated at Richards Dairy.
Back in those days, ice cream and milk were delivered in large metal cans, 
Capling said. Richards would serve on the St. Johns Board of Education from
1958 to 1974. He also was active with the Chamber of Commerce, the St. Johns 
Rotary Club and the Michigan Association of Volunteer Administrators. In 1977,
Richards founded Community Resource Volunteers to provide Clinton County 
schools with older volunteers to serve as mentors. Over the years the program
was expanded to introduce migrant students to computers and provide educational 
opportunities to youths and adults. Richards was its director at the time
of his death. As recently as Aug. 8, he was teaching a robotics class to 
children, Capling said. Richards was a "very generous person who loved to work
with young people in science programs,' said Jeanne Irrer serves on the CRV 
board. In 1984, seeing the need for public transportation for seniors, people
with disabilities and others unable to drive, he secured state funding and 
created St. Johns' first bus service. Today it operates as the county transit
system. Capling said Richards took Peckham Industries workers with disabilities 
to Higgins Lake for a vacation each year. He also organized cross-county
skiing trips for blind people. CRV volunteers were there to help. One of his 
programs at CRV encourages girls to study engineering. The group also has
computer labs set up for senior citizens, Capling said. "Wherever there was a 
need in the community he would see it," Capling said. A memorial service
