OOooh I've come over all chemical I usually use white spirits. Best to use in my experience the slightly more expensive brands since the cheapies don't evaporate totally but leave a small residue. I think the proper Humbrol thinners is a mixture of aliphatic hydrocarbons and some aromatic (aromatic here has a special technical meaning and does not imply a nice smell) ones like toluene and xylene. The old fashioned mothballs contained naphthalene (later ones contained a polychlorinated aromatic hydrocarbon). The think that sounds like it but is not it is naphtha which is basically a petroleum distillate part way in boiling point between petrol and diesel but it is a name that covers a mulitude of products. As for dremel look alikes ARC Eurotrade www.arceurotrade.co.uk offer one for £15. I haven't bought one yet but will probably do so soon. >From: "Len Smith" <parnobal2@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> > In my travelling kit I always kept a can of lighter fluid, which is a good thinners substitute for small jobs. (Having a senior moment here...can't remember exactly what the chemical is, but it sounds similar to the one in mothballs). >White spirits or turps are both OK for Humbrol, unlike some of the other, >newer makes around now, which seem to need special thinners. >Len Smith > ----- Original Message ----- > From: alanjstepney > To: modeleng@xxxxxxxxxxxxx > Sent: Thursday, October 21, 2004 10:25 PM > Subject: [modeleng] Humbrol > > Humbrol make a useful range of enamels, but the price of the thinners is > exhorbitant. > I used to now what it was, and found I could buy it in bulk for a >fraction > of the price that Humbrol charges. > > However, I have forgotten what it is. > Can anyone help? > > MODEL ENGINEERING DISCUSSION LIST.
