[MoAccess] mLAN16E2 for the Motif XS6.

I just bought an mLAN16E2 card cause I found one for a good price on e-bay.
I really want it to use as an audio interface to record stuff other than the
sounds on the Motif through my analog mixer. Much like one would use a
delta or fast trac cards. I use a Layla now which is what I'm trying to
replace with the mLAN card. Will this be as difficult to do as what Bryan
described below in an old message on this subject? I think Bryan was
referring to using the card to record audio from the Motif, which is not
what I'm trying to do. Hope I'm right about that cause if not, I've got to
put it back on e-bay.

Very hard. Nothing written to really help you make it work with Sonar
(everything assumes Cubase).

Install card. You have to take off the back panel of the XS near the USB
ports (two screws). Make sure power is off. Insert the card and replace
the screws.

Your computer needs Firewire support, and must use a Texas Instruments
controller. You need a 6 pin Firewire cable, and a full 6 pin port on
both ends.

Install drivers. Go to motifator.com and download the Yamaha Steinberg
Firewire driver. The YSFW driver doesn't play well with other
interfaces, so if you have another audio interface, disconnect it before
loading the drivers. Run the installer on your computer, and connect the
Motif when told to. On the Motif, in utility mode, you must go to the F1
SF4 screen and change the driver mode to YSFW mode. You also must go to
Utility, F5, SF2, and change the interface setting from USB to mLAN.
Don't forget to store your changes and restart the Motif.

You should have a Yamaha Steinberg driver icon in the task tray on your
computer. Right click, open settings. Make sure there is a tab for the
XS. If you don't have an XS tab, then the XS isn't connected, there is a
problem with your cable, the Motif's Utility mode settings are wrong,
etc. If you have an XS tab, though, then, on the general tab, set the
buffer setting to 256 samples. You can decrease this later once that
you're sure that mLAN works correctly with Sonar.

Update firmware. Back on Motifator, download the firmware updaters for
the Motif to the latest 1.5x operating system, and the latest firmware
updater for the mLAN card. Install those, or you'll get pops and
crackels in the audio.

Set Sonar audio options. In Sonar, under Audio Options, make sure the
driver mode is set for ASIO, and that the Yamaha Steinberg driver is
selected.

Setup Sonar MIDI. In Sonar MIDI options, you'll need to enable the Motif
XS MIDI ports: first is controller/tone generator, second is control
surface interface, third is external MIDI.

Setup instrument definitions. In Sonar instrument definitions, you need
to assign the Motif XS instrument definitions to XS port 1. If you don't
have the definitions, get them from MoAccess and import them.

Configure control surface support. In Sonar control surface options, add
a Mackie Control control surface, and set the in and out ports to XS
port 2. On the XS, in utility mode, go to F5 SF1, and set the DAW type
to Sonar. Save your Motif settings again.

When you want to record with Sonar, go to a blank song on the Motif,
press Seq Setup, press F3 to show the setup templates, turn the dial to
template 3, and press enter. This turns off local echo and sets clock to
external sync. When you want to work locally with the Motif, you must
switch back to template 1, or the Motif keyboard won't trigger internal
sounds and the internal sequencers won't operate. You also must set the
mLAN signal routing mode to "with PC". You do that by going to utility
mode on the Motif, going to the F2 screen, second option from the top,
and selecting the second setting with the data dial. When you're
finished with recording, you must switch this back to "stand alone", or
the Motif won't make any sound.

So, with Seq Setup set to PC, and with mLAN audio routing set to "with
PC" you can record in Sonar. Instead of the sound from the Motif going
to its main outputs, they go to the computer over mLAN Main out L/R. In
order for you to hear that, you must add an audio track to your Sonar
project with an external insert effect in the effects bin with the
return channel set to mLAN Main out L/R. Then, your project's master bus
should have its output set to mLAN Main out. This track serves as sort
of a bus for incoming Motif audio. The Motif audio comes in over mLAN to
the audio track with the external insert, goes to the master bus, and
then back out to the Motif. You should save the audio track as a track
template so that you don't have to create it over and over again,
however, be aware that there is a bug where Sonar doesn't save the
return menu setting in an external insert effect when it is saved as a
track template. So, each time you load your "mLAN bus" track template,
you'll have to manually set the return channel.

If you want to use additional mLAN channels, you'll need to add
additional copies of your mLAN bus track template to your project, set
that track's external insert effect's return channel to use a different
mLAN channel, and then change the settings of a part or parts on the
Motif to send on that other mLAN channel. The setting that effects the
channel that is used by an mLAN part is called the output channel. I
don't know where it is on the Motif screens, but you can adjust it with
the John Melas mix editor.

Consequently, each time you change the Motif's mixing settings, such as
changing the output channel used by a part or changing the mixing
characteristics of a part (EQ, filter settings, envelope off-sets, etc),
you must save these changes somewhere, or they'll be lost when you
switch to doing something else on the Motif. The most organized way of
storing this information is to save it as part of the Sonar project.

So, when you change the mixing setup on the XS, to store it to Sonar,
you have to:

Call up the SysEx view. Create a new bank (the C key does this in
CakeTalking). Select to manually start a dump from the instrument.

On the Motif, press song, mix, job, f4 (bulk dump), enter, and yes. Wait
about 2-3 seconds.

If you look around with the Jaws cursor, you'll notice that about 2900
bytes of data were received from the Motif. If not, then you didn't
start the SysEx bulk dump correctly on the Motif. If Sonar shows about
2900 bytes received, though, you can press the done button. Don't forget
to toggle the new SysEx bank's auto-load setting to on (use the A
shortcut key in CakeTalking to do this). Now, save your project. When
you load the project again, Sonar will automatically transmit the saved
mixing information back to the Motif.

One more concern to consider. When you're ready to mix down a project,
you still can use File|Audio|Export Audio. However, you need to select
the "What you hear" preset, and then tab over to the checkbox that
enables the real-time mix. There may be a preset for "what you hear -
realtime", but I've modded my Sonar so much I don't remember if that is
something that I made up on my own, or if it is included in the default
install. At any rate, the Motif isn't a softsynth, so you must mix down
in real-time, or you'll hear all sorts of out-of-time MIDI events.

This is most of what you need to know. There is a hell of a lot more to
setup if you want to be able to record arps, or use the XS's control
surface features. Frankly, I think that this stuff is way too
complicated for most people. I think that the Motif XS will be the last
hardware synth that I'll ever buy. I just don't have patience for this
stuff anymore.

Hi guys. I've decided to purchase the MLan expansion board for the motif
xs6. Can anyone recommend good resources on how to set it up and get it
working properly? This is a totally new concept for me so I don't know
anything about it at all.
Kind regards
