[MoAccess] Motif XS file mode notes.

The other day, in response to a request for info, I sent my notes on the
Motif XS file mode. But the message never made it to the list because I
sent it from a different e-mail account. Below are my notes again. Hope
this is helpful.
FILE MODE
First, some general notes. All of the comments here refer to file mode only
when you enter from voice mode. Things may vary if you enter file mode from
a different mode.
When you first enter file mode from voice mode, the cursor always ends up on
the file type option. When you exit file mode and return to it, the cursor
will, again, be on the type option, not where you last left it. This is
actually a good thing. The type option is originally set to all, and it
stays however you left it last. So, if you changed it to "all voice," the
next time you enter file mode, the cursor will land on "type:" and the type
option will be set to "all voice." You change options by using the inc/yes
and dec/no keys, or the data dial.
The order of type options when entering file mode from voice mode is:
All; All without system; All voice; Voice; All Arpeggio; Arpeggio; all
waveform; waveform; editor; all song; song; all pattern; pattern.
In file mode, the up and down arrows move between 4 options in the following
order:
Devise
Folder/directory, & files
Type:
Destination (bank and then program number).
So, for example, if you connected a memory stick to the board with the
volume name "jose" containing 2 folders named MoPianos and MoStrings, and
you enter file mode from voice mode, the screen might look something like
this:
Devise: Jose
^(an up-arrow) MoPianos; MoStrings
Type: all
Bank User1; 001
Let's analyze this display.
The first line says Devise: Jose. This just shows the name of the current
devise which is the USB memory stick named Jose.
The second line shows 3 things. The first thing which will always appear is
an up arrow. This means that if you hit enter here, the cursor will move to
the next parent directory. This is the only way to go back or up the folder
hierarchy. After that, to the right, accessible with the inc/yes button,
comes the list of folders and files in the current folder. In this case,
the next thing is the folder MoPianos, and then the folder MoStrings. If
there were a file at this level, it would be next. If you want to access a
file in one of the folders shown, you must hit enter when on the appropriate
folder. If you try to load while not on a file, you will get an error
message. If so, just hit enter to get out of the message. You move through
the folders or files using the inc/yes and dec/no buttons. I think these
things appear vertically on the screen , but you don't use the up and down
arrows to move through them. If you press down arrow, you will go to the
third option on the screen which is "type." One more note to keep in mind:
only files of the selected type on the type option show. So, if you select
the type all, only files with the extension .X0A will show. This is
important to remember because if you have 5 files in a folder and 3 of them
have the extension X0A, and 2 of them are all voice files with the extension
X0V, there will only be 3 files on the display. The 2 all voice files with
the extension X0V will not be there. This can throw you off if you are
relying on the number and order of files on the memory stick to guide you.
The third line says "Type:" and is where you select the type of data you
want to load or save. In this example, this line will say:
Type: all. This is the line on which the cursor falls by default every time
you enter file mode.
The fourth and last line says Bank: User1. This shows the bank memory
location from which you want to save or to which you want to load a file.
You can change the bank using the inc/yes and dec/no buttons. If you push
the right arrow, you will move to the program number on the same line. It's
originally set to 001, and you can change it using the inc/yes and dec/no
buttons.
Folders and files appear on the screen in alphabetical order. You can
control the order by using a 1 or 2 digit number in front of the name. You
do have to be familiar with the content of the USB devise in order to load
files. Remember the note above about some files not being on the list
depending on the file type you choose.
Now, when you are ready to either load or save after having picked the file
or set the appropriate parameters, press SF1 to save, or SF2 to load. The
load or save options only appear when the option is available. So, when you
first enter file mode, the save option appears, but the load option doesn't
always appear until you have selected a file that can be loaded. After you
press SF1 to save, you can write the file name, and then hit enter, or just
hit enter, and the file will have the same name as the currently selected
folder, but with an extension. After you hit SF2 to load, you have to press
inc/yes to confirm, or dec/no to cancel. For loading, you need not press
enter.
Saving and naming a file. When you hit SF1 to save a file, you can name it.
You name the file by moving to the letter you want with the inc/yes and
dec/no buttons, and entering the selected letter by pressing F4. You can
delete the currently selected letter by pressing F5. Each time you press
F4, the cursor moves to the next letter location, and the last letter you
enter remains selected. When done, hit enter to enter the name you wrote,
and save the file with that name.
Don't tell anybody else, but, when entering a name for a file I'm saving, I
just push the inc/yes button a bunch of times, and hit F4 twice or 3 times.
This gives my file a bogus name that I don't even know. Then, I put the
memory stick on my computer, find the 2 or 3 letter name with the
appropriate extension, and rename it the way I want. Of course, now you can
plug a regular keyboard to the Motif to write out names. My way works for
me.
