Between this Fri and next Fri I see Sat, Sun, Wed, & Thur. – broken winds.
Mon & Tue winds to Atlantic. Let me know if they fly under these conditions.
Most interesting.

Diane,
Good question. Here's my armchair analysis: Indeed, conditions for launch in
the Yucatan and Caribbean are pretty messy, and are forecast to remain so for a
while. That said, during the next week, migrants will be restless to move north
even if conditions are not ideal. It doesn't bode well for a huge push, but
there should be some birds heading north. Starting Sunday morning, winds are
forecast to start coming out of the north, and we are also forecast to have
some precipitation hanging over Mississippi (moreso in the center of the state
than on the coast, but some chance on the coast too). The migrants that ARE
moving over the Gulf will hit north winds (and maybe some rain) Sunday morning
and some may stop. Ditto Monday morning (without the precipitation). So, during
the next week or so, it seems Sunday morning may be best for migrant songbird
birding in the central and north parts of the state. On the coast, Sunday or
Monday look best, with Monday perhaps better as it gives another chance for
some migrants to come in (and the Sunday arrivals likely will stick around
overnight due to the north winds).
If anyone wants to try their own analysis, please check out the weather birding
protocol we recently posted on the Delta Wind Birds blog:

We will see what happens!

I just checked it and it looks like this weekend could be a bust. It is a
stretch but the next fair wind is Fri the 28th. Wonder what the birds are
going to do.

Hi JR
I have been keeping up with the Yucatan Express to see when we could expect
birds. It has been awful. The last good Express was Tuesday 4/11. Yesterday
was a fair wind to Texas Most of the winds are weak or non-existence. Sat is
a weak wind to LA. Sunday is a fair-weak wind to LA & MS. And this is the
winds higher than 480. The 480 is awful.

Missbirders,
Migration will be over in no time if we don't get some north winds soon!
Gene Knight, Jason Hoeksema, and I birded Rowan Oak this morning. It was not
especially active, but perseverance turned up a few new birds. Jason had a very
out of place MARSH WREN near the museum entrance to Bailey's Woods. BLUE-WINGED
WARBLER, one or possibly two CERULEAN WARBLERS, and an early BLACKPOLL WARBLER
also made an appearance along with an EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE. A CHESTNUT-SIDED
WARBLER was singing in my yard when I returned, and a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO
crossed the road ahead of my vehicle on the way.
No doubt a lot is passing through, but without some weather systems coming
through to slow things down, I'm not sure how much we can expect to enjoy the
transients this spring.
There's rain in the forecast this weekend. Here's hoping for a little "fallout"
in the Jackson area for the MOS meeting.
