Hey folks, there's another request going around about Rusty Blackbirds. Rusty Blackbirds have shown one of the steepest declines of any North American bird species. Scientists are still not sure exactly why, but possible factors include habitat loss, control programs, competition, and acid rain/other contaminates (especially on the breeding grounds). Some of you participated in the previous Rusty Blackbird Winter Blitzes that helped researchers studying the Rusty Blackbird identify hotspots for focusing research and management. These researchers are now proposing a similar blitz for the migration period (see http://ebird.org/content/ebird/news/unlocking-the-rusty-blackbird-mystery). This is to take place March-April 2014, but they're asking for people to do sort of a "trial run" this year and report their findings on eBird so they'll have an idea of where/when to focus efforts next year. It would be a huge help if you could report any Rusty Blackbird sightings over the next couple months on eBird.
