TITLE: MILKWEED FOR MONARCHS IN MISSISSIPPI
SUMMARY: Mississippi is home to eighteen species of native milkweeds
(Asclepias spp.) present in a variety of habitats. Drawn to the milkweeds
twice per year are monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus), as they migrate
from the Transvolcanic Mountains of Mexico, across the United States and into
Canada and back. Milkweeds are the host plants for monarch caterpillars, and
adult females actively search for these plants during oviposition. Monarch
populations have been on a steep decline over the last two decades, and loss
of milkweeds has been one contributing factor. One way we can help this
species is to plant native milkweeds and other native wildflowers, in efforts
to feed and sustain monarch caterpillars, butterflies, and other pollinator
species. Join us as we discuss Mississippi’s native milkweeds, monarch
butterflies, and how to help these and other important species.
BIOGRAPHY:
Audrey has been an avid entomologist since childhood, a regular attendee of
Mississippi State University’s Entomology Camp. During her undergraduate
program in Biology at Mississippi College, Audrey had the opportunity to do
research with Dr. Bill Stark, which set her on the trajectory she’s on today.
Audrey has a Master’s in Entomology at Clemson University, and a PhD in
biology at the University of Mississippi. Audrey’s work at the USACE focuses
on aquatic insects. She does lots of work on the Mississippi River.
