Bob and Lucy Duncan who now live in Florida pointed that out to me in an email
yesterday also. I was not aware of how much they are known for singing. We
finally counted 7 Fox Sparrows yesterday in our back yard. One singing a
longer, more complex song was the first thing I heard when I woke up this
morning. Very nice!

Thanks for the report--I had a Fox Sparrow singing near my yard recently too.
Fox Sparrows singing is one of my favorite winter birding phenomena, ever since
Gene Knight pointed it out to me during the Grenada CBC many years ago. I find
that they do it quite often especially on clear, sunny winter mornings, and
listening for their distinctive and charming song at woodland edges is a great
way to find Fox Sparrows that you would not otherwise detect.

Terry and I haven't had Fox Sparrows winter in our yard for several years now,

on birdseed I throw out in back yard.
Today in the snow, we've seen five at one time, and one or more of them is
singing! We've heard one singing occasionally in the past couple of weeks, but
today one is singing frequently. I'm hearing one now as I write this, singing

I'm wondering if he likes the snow, or likes the food he's finding in the snow,
or maybe he thinks spring is coming soon! Whatever his reason, it's enjoyable
to hear him sound so happy! And it makes me a little happier too in spite of
the very cold weather.

of you braving the cold and snow to look for birds.
