Speaker: James Starnes, Geologist, Director of Surface Geology,

Title: THE ICE AGES & MISSISSIPPI’S GEOLOGY
Summary: The ice ages of the Pleistocene had profound effects on
Mississippi, even though the glaciated regions of the country were further to
the north. Take a trip with me to learn how these drastic environmental
changes remarkably shaped our state into the Mississippi we know today. We
will travel from Desoto County in the North all the way to the mouth of the
Pascagoula River in the South to discover an alien habitat from a
not-so-distant past. A past when elephants, lions, saber-toothed cats,
horses, and giant bears called our backyard home. Our journey will follow
icebergs rafting down the Mississippi River carrying giant rocks ripped from
bedrock by glaciers a thousand miles away and will reveal the ancient
coastline now drowned by the sea. Our adventure begins at Noon on July 2,
2019.
