Join us for Advanced Birding with Wildlife Biologist and SPAC
Researcher/Volunteer, Hal Mitchell. This program's goal is to provide
participants with the requisite tools to aid in the identification of birds in
our area. Though it is open to all backgrounds, having an understanding of
common birds of the region is recommended and highly beneficial.
We will begin with a 2 hour interactive presentation, with a break in between,
followed by a guided hike, implementing the techniques and topics discussed.
Topics will include: general impression of size/shape, avian topography, molt,
vocalizations, behavior, habitat preferences, and common pitfalls that trip up
even the best birders. We'll also highlight similar species for MS/TN that are
difficult to distinguish, both visually and vocally. Participants are
encouraged to bring a sack lunch and stick around for a guided hike with
several knowledgeable SPAC staff and volunteers.
