Trojan Horses: How Can I Get Infected? by Dancho Danchev
http://www.pcflank.com/art30.htm
the author of "The Complete Windows Trojans Paper".

A lot of people out there can't differ various ways of infection just
because in their minds the only way of getting infected is by downloading
and running server.exe and they will never do it as they say. As you'll read
here, there are many more ways for malicious attackers to infect your
machine and start using it for illegal activities. Please take all of these
topics I'm reviewing here really seriously; read them carefully and remember
that prevention is way better than the cure!

"This program is designed for copying files from disks which have sustained

case the program can not read part of a file it will fill that section of

NTREGOPT
Registry Optimization for Windows NT/2000/XP v1.0 Freeware
http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt
Similar to Windows 9x/Me, the registry files in an NT-based system
can become fragmented over time, occupying more space on your hard
disk than necessary and decreasing overall performance. You should
use the NTREGOPT utility regularly, but especially after installing
or uninstalling a program, to minimize the size of the registry files
and optimize registry access.

Halloween Safety Tips
http://www.sosnet.com/safety/halloween.tip.html

Trick-or-Treaters
Carry a flashlight
Walk, don't run.
Stay on Sidewalks
Obey traffic signals
Stay in familiar neighborhoods
Don't cut across yards or driveways.
Wear a watch you can read in the dark.
Make sure costumes don't drag on the ground.
Shoes should fit (even if they don't go with your costume)
Avoid wearing masks while walking from house to house.
Carry only flexible knives, swords or other props.
(If no sidewalk) walk on the left side of the road facing traffic
Wear clothing with reflective markings or tape.
Approach only houses that are lit.
Stay away from and don't pet animals you don't know.

Parents
Make your child eat dinner before setting out.
Children should carry quarters so they can call home.
Ideally, young children of any age should be accompanied by an adult.
If your children go on their own, be sure they wear a watch, preferably one
that can be read in the dark.
If you buy a costume, look for one made of flame-retardant material.
Older children should know where to reach you and when to be home.
You should know where they're going.
Although tampering is rare, tell children to bring the candy home to be
inspected before consuming anything.
Look at the wrapping carefully and toss out anything that looks suspect.

Homeowners
Make sure your yard is clear of such things as ladders, hoses, dog leashes
and flower pots that can trip the young ones.
Pets get frightened on Halloween. Put them up to protect them from cars or
inadvertently bitting a trick-or-treater.
Battery powered jack o'lantern candles are preferable to a real flame.
If you do use candles, place the pumpkin well away from where
trick-or-treaters will be walking or standing.
Make sure paper or cloth yard decorations won't be blown into a flaming
candle.
Healthy food alternatives for trick-or-treaters include packages of low-fat
crackers with cheese or peanut butter filling, single-serve boxes of cereal,
packaged fruit rolls, mini boxes of raisins and single-serve packets of
low-fat popcorn that can be microwaved later.
Non-food treats: plastic rings, pencils, stickers, erasers, coins.

The Origins of Halloween
http://www.malaspina.com/burning/halloween/rowan.htm
In recent years, there have been a number of pamphlets put out by various
Christian organizations dealing with the origins of modern day Halloween
customs. Being a Witch myself, and a student of the ancient Celts, from whom
we get this holiday, I have found these pamphlets woefully inaccurate and
poorly researched. In an effort to correct some of this erroneous
information, I have spent several months researching the religious life of
the ancient Celtic peoples and the survivals of that religious life in
modern day times. Listed below are some of the most commonly asked questions
concerning the origins and customs of Halloween. Following the questions is
a lengthy bibliography where the curious reader can go to learn more about
this holiday than space in this small pamphlet permits.

Indigenous people wouldn't let 'Day of the Dead' die by Carlos Miller
http://www.azcentral.com/ent/dead/history/
The Arizona Republic
More than 500 years ago, when the Spanish Conquistadors landed in what is
now Mexico, they encountered natives practicing a ritual that seemed to mock
death.
Art by Patrick Murillo, www.chicanofolkart.com

It was a ritual the indigenous people had been practicing at least 3,000
years. A ritual the Spaniards would try unsuccessfully to eradicate.

A ritual known today as Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.

The ritual is celebrated in Mexico and certain parts of the United States,
including the Valley.

Celebrations are held each year in Mesa, Chandler, Guadalupe and at Arizona
State University. Although the ritual has since been merged with Catholic
theology, it still maintains the basic principles of the Aztec ritual, such
as the use of skulls.

Although celebrated in all Catholic countries as All Saints' and All Souls'
Days, surely no other peoples have embraced the festival of The Day of the
Dead to the extent that the Mexicans have. The celebration begins on the
evening of October 31, so the name Los Dias de los Muertos is also often
used. This festival is considered by many to be the most important holiday
of the year in Mexico.

 Nigerian Letter Scam
 http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/scams/nigerian.htm
NOTE:

Please forward Nigerian/African letters to wafl@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx The
Phonebusters National Call Center ('PNCC') is a joint partnership involving
the Ontario Provincial Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The
PNCC is very interested in receiving copies of any 'new' versions of
Nigerian letter scheme, particularly those involving Canadian mailing
addresses or telephone numbers. This valuable intelligence information is
used to assist in the strategic targeting of would be fraudsters.

Watch out for the Nigerian Business letter scam! For years now, businesses,
learning institutions, and government departments have been receiving
e-mails from senders posing as Nigerian government or business officials
offering to share large sums of money.

PeopleCards

http://www.peoplecards.com/

PeopleCards are a new line of hilarious collectible trading cards
that feature real people from across the globe in all their
glory. These cards are not some made-up form of "reality
entertainment" - these guys are real...in someways, people may
not even share this much about themselves with close friends. We
asked everyone a whole bunch of funny, odd, and plain old cool
questions about their lives, likes and experiences.

They don't have special powers of persuasion or the ability to
see through walls, they can't fly or shoot fireballs from their
eyes, because that stuff just isn't real. What they do have is
the special powers of who they really are, in all their glory. Oh
yeah, and they're 100% celebrity-free.

PeopleCards are a perfect gift for the someone special who
appreciates...the unusual. Why deal with the hassle of searching
and searching stores for just the right gift, only to have to
ship it later? Let us do it for you!

Special Characters
Have you ever been working on a document and had to insert a
special character that's not found on your keyboard? You know,
stuff like a degree symbol, a small square (checkbox), or
copyright symbol (a small
list, but it gives you the idea).

Here's How:

Click the Start Button, Programs, Accessories, System Tools -
Select Character Map.

You'll be presented with a screen that has lots of different
symbols. When you click (and hold) a symbol, it gives you an
enlarged preview of it.

To actually select the symbol:

1. Click the symbol you want
2. Click the Select button, then the Copy button.

This will copy your symbol onto the clipboard where you can then
paste it into any word processor.

Some word processors give you direct access to the character map.
In Word for example, click the Insert menu and select Symbol...
You will be given a "customized" screen that can automatically
insert a symbol into your current document.

Finally, if you find yourself using a particular symbol all the
time, check out the lower right hand corner of the above window
(on the status bar) it gives you a keystroke combo you can use to
generate the current
character.
