Dear members of the EAPS Working Group Migrant and Minority Fertility in
Europe,
I am Pieter Callewaert, student master of arts in diversity at Ghent
University (Belgium).
I contact you regarding my master's degree dissertation about stratified
reproduction in the hope MPI Europe can give me some advice.
In the study, I am looking for processes, practices, discourses and
policies in member states of the European Union creating a system in which
autochthonous inhabitants are empowered to nurture and reproduce, while
people with a migration background are disempowered to do so.
By way of illustration:
In the United Kingdom there are income requirements for migrants who reside
in the country based on a spousal visa. However, these requirements
increase for every non British child in the family. Lonergan (2018, p. 11)

demonstrates
that due to this rule, migrants might postpone having children in order to
avoid deportation. Another example is the gradual childbenefits in Danmark

How long you lived or worked in the country for the last ten years
determines how much money you receive to take care of your child. Due to
this rule new migrants receive less financial support for their children.
I have found similar examples in Hungary and Croatia.
When you read this, do you think of similar examples? If you would know
examples, I wonder if you would be so kind to inform me about this by mail
or maybe we can have a conversation about it? You might be able to refer me
to relevant literature or organisations/experts?
