Dear All,
Seacoasts are the major geomorphic systems with abundant landforms. They
occur in different types, shapes, origins, and functions and are the
ecotones formed at the intercept of marine and terrestrial environments.
Sea or littoral caves are one type of coastal landform which are apparent
in the rocky shores, typically formed by wave actions. These caves are not
only an excellent example of the geologic event but also provide crucial
information about the paleoclimate of the region and function as habitats
to many marine and terrestrial species. Conservation of these critical
habitats and mapping them is essentially the need of the hour. With her
immense passion for the subject, Ms Dhanusha Kawalkar will take us on a
whirl to give more insights about these less-understood habitats and why
studying them is crucial.
Ms Kawalkar is keen on understanding caves, subterranean systems and their
ecology. She is a researcher and PhD Scholar at Sálim Ali Centre for
Ornithology and Natural History (SACON), India. She is also the co-founder
of Speleological Association of India, playing a vital role in day-to-day
functioning of the organization. She has studied caves (coastal and inland)
and cave fauna in the Andaman Islands and Maharashtra. Based on her
experience working with the cave-dwelling Edible-nest Swiftlet (*Aerodramus
fuciphagus*) as part of her doctoral research, Ms. Kawalkar is now studying
Indian Swiftlet (*Aerodramus unicolor*) in the caves on the offshore
islands of Maharashtra.
