Thank you. ---------------------------------- Basudha’s Biotechnology Laboratory for Conservation, sponsored by Community Foundation, is established in Kolkata, with the explicit aim to documenting, characterising, and promoting conservation of the country’s biological heritage. This lab is engaged in molecular study of folk crops and their ancestors, understanding diversity and history Indian floral/faunal members and tissue culture of critically endangered plants, to promote their characterisation and conservation for the benefit of the communities, and for posterity. Brief Job Description: Evolutionary genomics of rice domestication: Domestication of rice has begun 10-12,000 years ago when ancient people initiated harvesting of wild grass Oryza rufipogon, O. nivara, ancestors of modern rice. A series of repeated experimentation has finally given rise to a large number of rice landraces carrying very unique signatures of domestication. These landraces possess high phenotypic diversity thus ensuring adaptive power to a widely varying environment, e.g. salt tolerance, submergence tolerance etc. to name a few. We broadly aim to 1. genetically characterise the wild ancestors of rice, 2. identification of key domestication traits and assessing their genetic underpinning, 3. characterisation of adaptive traits using an assemblage of molecular, biochemical and physiological methods. 4. biochemical characterisation. The broad topic of research is as above mentioned and the routine job includes mostly molecular (DNA extraction, PCR, sequence editing and alignment, analyses of the result), less biochemical and physiological work. Qualifications and skills: Master’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Agriculture, Botany, Zoology, Forestry, or equivalent in any related discipline. Project duration: Initially for twelve months, extendable upon performance and funding. Start date: Initial date February 1st, 2015, but will continue until suitable candidate(s) are found. Fellowship: INR 12,000 p.m consolidated, depending on expertise. plus INR 1000 toward HRA, for out-station candidates. The person would share authorship in all scientific publications. Candidate’s research may lead to Ph.D. The interview will be held in last week of January, 2015.
