Mirzapur is a small district between Allahabad and Varanasi on bank of river Ganga and the advent of Vindhyan range of mountains. We have seen the great loss of biodiversity in once dense forests of Singrauli and Sonbhadra which are now heavily disturbed to support wildlife as it used to years ago. However, forests of Mirzapur are still surviving in patches and the good news is Mirzapur has good number of biological diversity. One of our member did an investigation with Forest Department and he was amazed with the records of species like Swamp Deer, Sloth Bear, Chinkara, Blackbuck, Sambar, Chital, Hyena, Bengal Monitor and so on, many pf them protected as Schedule I species under Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 . It is apprehended that, unless we demand a strong united action from the State, the forests of Mirzapur will follow the same fate as its neighbouring districts has met. We feel that the State Government needs to take proactive action towards conservation of the forests to protect the biodiversity of Mirzapur. It is very unfortunate that the forests of Mirzapur are not given due attention despite being so rich in biodiversity,. This lack of recognition is evident from the fact that though many of the forest ranges in Mirzapur are notified as Reserve Forests, none of them are protected areas (Wildlife Sanctuary or National Park) under Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. In view of the critical situation of the wildlife of Mirzapur and considering the fact that the forests of Mirzapur are of great ecological, faunal, floral, geomorphological, natural and zoological significance, and the need to Protect, Propagate and Develop the wildlife and its environment-the attached representation calls up the government and organizations to support us in the following agendas: 1. Notify the Forests of Mirzapur protected under Wildlife Act, 1972 as Sanctuary/National Park without any further delay. 2. Urgently prepare a ‘Wildlife Action and Management Plan’ comprising of forests and wildlife experts from reputed institutions like WII, WWF and WTI to enhance the survival of the wild flora and fauna. 3. Prohibit any developmental activities within and around the forests of Mirzapur tiill the areas are declared as Protected Areas as mentioned above. A detailed representation which is to be made to govt of Uttar Pradesh is attached. We are also attaching the survey reports done by Forest Department fo Uttar Pradesh in the year 2011 and 2013. Please revert me to this email if you agree to endorse the petition and whether we should keep your name in the signatory latest by 11th December, 2014 before 9 PM. The signatory's name and organization will be included in the official petition which will be sent to related departments of Govt. of Uttar Pradesh and Centre; and also acknowledged on the web page http://vindhyabachao.org/protect-mirzapur-forests Please also include your suggestions, if any and forward it to others who you may think can be a signatory.
