Hi,
Cetaceans are really fascinating creatures and we have learned so much
about them from global research. However, in India, research on them
remains limited despite the fact that at least 25 species are known
to occur in its waters.There is little published knowledge on baseline
population levels or even systematic records of species occurrences at
various locations along the Indian coast. But behind published studies, I
believe that there is a ton of unpublished exploratory, and anecdotal
experience that can immensely add to our understanding of these animals.
The Indian subcontinent offers a unique socio-environmental setting, for
example the bathymetric and climatic conditions in the east vs west coast
are strikingly different; understanding what that means for cetaceans,
requires a baseline level of information on them, and this email is about a
small step in that direction.
I have prepared a short google form in an attempt to collect unpublished
and anecdotal information on Indian cetaceans at a very coarse level, from
researchers who have worked on, or surveyed cetaceans, anywhere in the
country. The survey takes 3 - 10 mins depending on the amount of
information one would like to provide. The link to the form is here

The outputs from this survey, combined with present studies and records,
can help provide a holistic picture of these animals and perhaps boost
cetacean research, to fill current information gaps.
